Rio Tinto Supports Central Highlands Conference

Rio Tinto Coal Australia’s Kestrel Mine is proud to be a sponsor in the Central Highlands 2012 Conference, ‘Investing in our Future’.

Kestrel Mine is one of four Rio Tinto Coal Australia operations in Queensland.

It is our only underground coal operation, and is located 40km north east of Emerald in central Queensland and produces coking coal and thermal coal for export. Currently, work is underway to extend the life of Kestrel Mine by 20 years and increase capacity to up to 5.7 million tonnes per annum.

Kestrel Mine is proud to be a long term member of the Emerald community supporting a wide range of projects and partnerships to help build a stronger and more sustainable community in the Emerald region.

Wherever possible, partnerships are sought to provide long term benefits to the community, aiming to decrease community dependence on our mining activities.

Since 2003, more than $1.5 million has been invested in local community projects through our two community funds: the Kestrel Mine Community Development Fund and Kestrel Mine Aboriginal Community Development Fund.

Initiatives have included projects that support business development, arts and culture, the environment, health and wellbeing, education and training opportunities for people within the Emerald district, as well as for descendents of the Traditional Owner group, the Kangoulu People.

Rio Tinto are proudly supporting the Central Highlands Conference – Investing in our Future (16 – 17 March 2012, Emerald, Queensland).
